What to Eat Before a Basketball Game: Fuel to Win

Knowing what to eat before a basketball game can help ensure that athletes have the energy needed to compete at their best through the final buzzer.

Let’s review the energy demands of basketball. Then we will explore a variety of pre-game meal and snack ideas that will help fuel basketball players for optimal performance.

Energy Demands of Basketball

Basketball is a demanding, high-intensity sport. To excel on the court, athletes must have speed, power, endurance, and agility (1).

During a game, basketball players must rapidly transition between sprinting, jumping, changing directions, and shooting. These actions require athletes to rely on both their anaerobic and aerobic energy systems throughout the game (1).

Having a carefully planned pre-game nutrition strategy can help basketball players go into their competitions well fueled.

What to Eat Before a Basketball Game: Meal Ideas

When possible, I encourage basketball players to eat their pre-game meal ~3-4 hours prior to the start of the competition. Carbohydrates should be at the foundation of the athlete’s pre-game meal (1).

In addition to carbohydrates, basketball players can include a moderate amount of protein with their pre-game meal.

How Much Carbohydrate Before a Basketball Game?

Carbohydrates provide basketball players with the energy needed for optimal performance. Thus, consuming an adequate amount of carbohydrate prior to a game is important.

When planning the pre-game meal, it is recommended athletes aim to eat 1-4 g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight, 1-4 hours prior to the start of the game (1, 2).

For example, if the pre-game meal is 3 hours prior to the game, athletes should aim for 3 grams of carbohydrate per kg of body weight.

Similarly, if the pregame meal is 4 hours prior to the start of the game, athletes can eat more, and should aim for 4 grams of carbohydrate per kg of body weight.

The chart below provides an example of carbohydrate recommendations for a 165-pound athlete at the pre-game meal.

Time Before GameCarbohydrate Goal for Pre-Game MealCarbohydrate Goal for 165-pound Athlete
4 hours4 g / kg body weight300 grams carbohydrate
3 hours3 g / kg body weight225 grams carbohydrate

I commonly find that many athletes underfuel with carbohydrates prior to a basketball game. Therefore, increasing carbohydrate intake with the pre-game meal  is one area basketball players can quickly capitalize on to take their performance to the next level.

Pro Tip: Make sure to check out my blog on carbs for athletes for additional tips on helping athletes to meet their carbohydrate needs.

  • Turkey sub sandwich, pretzels, apple slices, sports drink

Foods to Limit Before a Basketball Game

In addition to knowing what foods to eat, it can be helpful for basketball players to know what foods to limit with their pre-game meal.

Prior to activity, it is recommended that basketball players limit foods that are high in fat or high in fiber. Foods high in these nutrients can slow digestion and lead to GI distress during the game (1).

This includes foods such as:

  • Fried or greasy foods, high-fat meats
  • Cream, cheese, alfredo, or butter sauces
  • Brussels sprouts, cabbage, beans, legumes
  • High-fiber whole grains
  • Dessert type foods (ice cream, milk shake, brownies)

What to Eat Before a Basketball Game: Snack Ideas

In the hour leading up to the start of the game, basketball players should continue fueling with easy to digest, carbohydrate-rich snacks (1). A high-carb snack will provide athletes with a quick source of energy as they head into the game.

Ideas for pre-game snacks for basketball players include:

  • Banana, small piece of fresh fruit
  • Applesauce squeeze pouch
  • Dried fruit, fruit leather
  • Pretzels, pita chips, snack crackers
  • Cereal bar, granola bar or bites
  • Carbohydrate-based sports bar
  • Sports drinks, chews, gels

Pro Tip: Basketball players should plan ahead and pack snacks for the bus that they can enjoy on their way to competitions.

What to Eat Before a Basketball Game: Hydration

In addition to considering what to eat before a basketball game, it is essential for athletes to consider their hydration needs as well.

Dehydration can negatively impact an athlete’s health as well as sports performance. Research on basketball players has shown that even minimal dehydration (as little as 2%) can impair performance on the court. As dehydration becomes more severe, progressive decreases in basketball performance are seen (3).

Therefore, starting a basketball game in an optimally hydrated state and rehydrating throughout the game is important.

Hydration Before a Basketball Game

With the pregame meal (4 hours prior to the game), basketball players should aim to consume ~2 cups (500 ml) of fluid. Athletes can choose to hydrate with a variety of different fluid options with the meal, such as: water, a sports drink, milk, or 100% fruit juice (1).

Basketball players should continue hydrating in the 1-2 hours before the start of the game, as well as 15-30 minutes pre-game. During each of these time periods I encourage athletes to hydrate with another 6-8 oz (200-250 ml) of water or a sports drink (1).

Practice Your Basketball Pre-Game Fueling Strategy

Each athlete is unique in terms of what foods and beverages they feel best eating before competition. Thus, I encourage basketball players to practice their pre-game fueling strategy in advance (2).

This will provide the athletes with confidence on game day that they are fueled to perform at their best.
